Roberts was fouled hard and took a unfortunate fall during our last regular season game last Saturday against Lindenwood, thus ending her season all too quickly. Roberts MRI showed a shot meniscus which is lodged in the back of her knee, while blocking view of her ACL. At this point the doctor is uncertain of the amount of damage to her ACL but does think it is torn. He'll will not be able to determine the severity until he goes in to operate. We are obviously hoping for the "best case" scenario in this situation. Please keep Roberts in your prayers as she has a battle ahead of her.
The stays positive...with Roberts out the team is respoding! Sophomore Courtney McCartney filler the starting spot last night in our first round conference game against...Lindenwood. Senior Erica Ferguson led all scorers with 16 points (3-4 from beyond the arc!) and 6 rebounds. Senior Hillary Adams chipped in 11 points as Sophomore Katie Bond added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman standout holly Switzer player a great game contributing 12 points (also 3-4 from the arc!) and 5 rebounds. This was a great team effort as everyone on the bench played and contributed to another great win. The game ended 72-41 in our favor!
Next up...round 2 against Baker Saturday night at 7pm at home! And tonight...the MEN TAKE ON EVANGEL IN ROUND 2 ...GOOD LUCK TO MEN!!! We'll be there to support you!

CONFERENCE CHAMPS!!!

Im sure most of you have figured it out but we did indeed win the conference race in the regular season giving us the title as CONFERENCE CHAMPS! We beat Lindenwood at home 98-58 and the seniors led the way. Scoring was led by Seniors Jessica Stewart and Haley Stockton who each connected on 3 trey's. Both ended with 13 points and Stockton also pulled down 7 boards and went 4-4 from the free throw line. Fellow Senior Hillary Adams threw in 10 points while Senior Erica Ferguson dished out 4 assist. The underclassman followed the senior leadership and kept the game going as Junior Ashley Patton went 3-3 from behind the arc and Sophomore Brandie Roberts ended with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. We ask that you keep Roberts in your prayers as she went down in the second half with a knee injury. As of now we are unsure of the results but are staying positive that it will be nothing serious!
I'd like to take a moment to thank each ot our seniors for their hard work and leadership they put out each and everyday! You all have paved a road to greatness throughout your time here at Jewell and I am so happy I was able to become apart of the Billy Jewell family this year and witness first hand all your hard work and determination. Each of you have taught me something I will always remember and I thank you for that.
Erica F.-You are the hardest worker I know-you are an inspiration!
Hillary-The fight in you is incredible and your desire for greatness is contagious!
Jessica-Your heart and passion is the glue to this team-You are truly one of the best leaders I've seen!
Haley-You just might be the strongest person I know! Our girls came our ready to play and on fire! The had determination in their eyes and they didn't stop until the final buzzer! We played a great game on both sides of the floor and everyone made a contribution! We were all on the same page and it showed. Shooting star Hillary Adams led the way with 14 points. Although EU tried to take the trey away from Adams she answered by hitting 3-5 from behing the arc in key moments of the game that really ignited the Jewell fire! Senior Erica Ferguson played incredible defense on sharp shooter Caitlin Russell from Eu to limit her to only ONE 3 for the game...and forcing her to throw up off balance hail maries! Ferguson followed the game plan and made Russell put the ball on the floor and forcing her to 5 turn overs! Senior Jessica Stewart went head to head with EU point guard Ashley Luko and won the battle. Stewart's intense defense and leadership on the floor held Luko to only 6 points and kept her from driving the lane. Stewart can shoot the ball as good as anybody and has showed that the past few games as she has taken on more of a scoring role...don't get me wrong she is still dishing out assist after assist but she is stepping up and focusing more on the rim but knocking down shot after shot. Stewart ended the game with 13 points (two 3's). Sophomore Brandie Roberts had her work cut out for her and she succeeded with flying colors. She grabbed 9 boards and tossed in 11 points...went 5--5 from the cherry stripe, two of which were late in the game to give us a two point advantage over the Crusaders. Sophomore sensation Katie Bond and Standout Freshman Holly Switzer gave solid minutes of making things happen on the floor. Both played with tough and made key passes to get the ball in the hole. Winning this game mades us tied (with EU) for FIRST in the conference race.

Ferguson on FIRE-GU game finallay played

Last night we played the long awaited game at home against graceland. After being cancelled twice previously we were ready to get this game in. We started out the first half pretty well but GU's guards kept them in it. They were relentless on driving the paint; they are by far the quickest guards in conference and can be lethal if you don't stop penetration. GU fought back to a 30-35 half time score. Senior Erica Ferguson was on fire tonight defensively and offensively. She led with 9 boards at halftime-4 of them offensive and 3 counted for immediate putbacks.
The second half we put on a great team effort with Ferguson leading the way and getting everyoen going. She ended the game with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assist and those stats don't even emphasize her efforts on defense-her best played game of the year. Sophomore Brandie Roberts wasn't far behind as she worked for every point she got battling in the paint. She stayed poised and ended with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Sharp shooting senior Hillary Adams chipped in 15 points and hit a couple 3's to give us momentum to take off in the second half, while Senior Jessica Stewart directed traffic and dished out 7 assist and threw in 10 points. The leadership of Stewart behind the ball gives us the lift we need to be successful; she not only runs the team offensively but locks down on defense day in and day out.
Up next...we travel to Evangel on Thursday. The Cardinals are sitting at first in the coference as we trail tightly in second. Last meeting with the Crusaders the game was hard fought but we fell short by 2 at the end. We look to come out hard and play tough every second. This is a game to NOT miss. It'll be exciting as both teams battle it out.

BIG game vs EU

Tonight we take on Evangel at home at 5:30pm. Tonight is a big game for us; we need to win to get back on track after two tough losses. Tonight will be a good battle on both sides and should be a fun game to watch. This one gets personal for me as I played and coached at Evangel prior to coming to Jewell, so it will be bitter sweet. Then men also play tonight at 7:30 which will also be a thriller I'm sure as they are tied in conference and battle it out tonight. We would love to see everyone there; come out and support your favorite teams!

It's a greay day to be a Cardinal.

Two tough loses but bouncing back

The past week and a half has been humbling for us. We took on Baker last Thursday and lost 60-62. The game was back and forth the entire game. We shot 33% for the game, 4-23 from behind the arch and only 20-28 from the cherry stripe...not yout typical Lady Cardinal performance on the offensive end. If anything we learned that when shots aren't falling we've got to dig deeper defensively and make better decisions with the ball. We have and open look at the basket with only 3 seconds left on the clock, unfortunately it didn't fall so we had no chance at over time and Baker won by 2 points. It's always tough to lost what was a very capabale game to be won especially at home...but an eye opener.
Saturday we traveled to Avila where we hoped for a better performance and outcome. We had high hopes but again we fell short losing 63-64 to a banked in 3 pointer by Avila...ouch! What hurt even more is Jessica Stewart made a half court shot right after the buzzer which would have put us up 1 to win it...the inrony of it all! Defensively we didn't play well together and again made key mistakes. We had open looks at the basket in the end but couldn't connect on any of them. If we didn't feel bad enough after Thursday's loss we did after this one. It's always touch to lose but even more tough when you know you had opportunities to win the game. So what do we do now? ...we bounce back!!! We have another battle ahead of us against Evangel tomorrow night at home. Another top team in conference comes in to our house trying to take us down but we ready and we'll respond as a team. We've been working hard in practice and taking time to reflect on some things that we could have done differently in the previous games. We feel the losses but we aren't dwelling on them...great teams bounce back and get ready to play and we're doing just that.
We hope to see you all at the game tomorrow night and we thank you for all your support! The women's game starts at 5:30 with the men's game to follow at 7:30; both will be great battles to watch!

It's a great day to be a Cardinal!

Bond is back

Sophomore Katie Bond returns to action tonight against Baker at home after being sideline for 3 weeks with a concussion. We went into Christmas break on a good note ending the first half of our seaon in Vegas where we won both games and shared some good times. We defeated Holy Names 82-67 and Fresno Pacific 73-62. The girls put together to strong outings to finish on a high note. Sophomore Katie Bond got a concussion in the second game leaving her out for the remainder of the game. She got her second concussion a couple days ago in practice again sidelining her. She will not be playing tonight as we take on Benedictine in our first game back from break. Freshman Holly Switzer will step in in her place. The girls came back strong and have been working hard in practice to get off to a good start in the second half of season. They are excited and ready to play as we travel to their place. Game times are woman at 5:30 and men at 7:30. We would love to see you all there but please allow yourself enough time and travel safe if you do decide to come.
Best wishes to all of you from your Cardinal family!

It's a great day to be a Cardinal.

Hot start in Conference play...3-0

Hot start in Conference play…
We are 3-0 in conference play as we take a little time off for Christmas break and Vegas! First up we had Graceland (away)…the score went in our favor 92-82. The team was led in scoring by senior Erica Ferguson with 28 points. Senior Hillary Adams was close behind with 17 points and connecting of 4 treys. These two seniors are paving the way for the Lady Cardinals!
Next up we traveled to Missouri Valley where we put on a 84-59 showing to get our second conference win. The team was led by Sophomore sensations Brandie Roberts who led the team with 23 points, and shooting 9-9 from the cherry stripe, all while pulling down 15 rebounds and Katie Bond who went 4-4 from behind the arc and dished in a total of 16 points while grabbing 7 rebounds. These kids have a bright future ahead of them!
Finally!!! …our long awaited FIRST home game…10 games into season and we finally play at home! The team was excited to finally go to work on THEIR own hardwood after being on the road 10 straight games. As excitement boiled, the ladies came out strong beating cross town rival MidAmerica 75-53. Again Brandie Roberts led the way with 17 points and 8 rebounds, while Katie Bond and Erica Ferguson each tossed in 14 points, while Bond pulled down 11 rebounds.
The great thing about this team is anyone can score on any given night…we don’t have to rely on one person to score to be successful…every girl can score…every girl can rebound…and that is what we need to be successful as a team. Adams is finding herself in a bit of a different role this year, as teams are keying on her. To some players they would fold under all the pressure but not Adams…she has become the play maker dishing out assist after assist, making diving pass after diving pass, and still chipping in 14 points per game. Adams isn’t the only one making things happen, as the team has 4 girl scoring in double figures game after game. Ferguson is avg. 16/ppg, Roberts 13/ppg and Bond 12/ppg. It’s a great day to be a Cardinal…every day!!!

5-3...Akins and Adams go down

Throughout each season every team is faced with obstacles that are unknown; the worst of these unknowns are injuries that occur. Two weeks ago we participated in the Northwest Classic playing William Penn Friday night and NW Saturday night. Despite a so-so display of defense Friday night we came away with a victory, winning 74-52 to William Penn. Shots were falling for us but we quickly noticed during that game that defense is still our struggle. Hillary Adams recieved a high pass during the game in which reaching for it she somehow managed to hyperextend her knee, yet throughout the game she played and didn't think abything about it. The next morning she woke up and couldn't walk...a tearful Adams had to sit out against her wishing of our NW game that night, missing the first game ever of her college career. Adams soon had a partner by her side in Erica Akins as she went down with a knee injury early in the game. Like Adams she insisted on playing, was tested by the trainer and sent back in the game. Within 5 seconds of being on the floor Akins went down a second time as her knee gave out. Needlesstosay she was done for the rest of the game. We fell to NW Saturday night 75-58. Again with a mediocre performance on defense we went back to the basics in practice the following week. We stressed the importance on defense and broke it down, then broke it down again, and after that broke it down again...repetitive, yes but incredibly helpfu for the team. The team responded well and agreed they wanted/needed to be more productive on defense. Everyday is a learning day, and everday is a opportunity to get better! As we worked hard to continue to improve we anxiously waited for Adams and Akins results from the doctor. We were relieved to hear Adams would be back in action only having to sit out for one more day with a deep contusion to the knee, yet saddened to find that Akins would be done for the season with a torn ACL. It's always hard to see a player be sidelined due to injury, and it's even harder when is their senior season. Inspite of it all, Akins is in good spirits. Not happy about the situation obviously but staying positive for her teammates!
Before Thanksgiving break we ended on a great note beating Missouri S&T 74-63. We had 4 players in double figures, Erica Ferguson led all scorers with 23 points, only missing two shots. Hillary Adams bounced back quickly after being out for a few days adding 15 points. Sophmores, Katie Bond and Brandie Roberts each had 10 points, Bond grabbed 9 rebounds and Roberts grabbed 10. We were 19-19 from the stripe.
After a few days off to be with families and friends we are hitting it hard as we prepare to open up conference play this Thursday in Lamoni, Ia vs. Graceland.

It's always a great day to be a Cardinal!

Bring out the BIG GUNS

First off for those of you that were unable to attend the Ottawa game Tues we won! It's always nice to start the season out with a "W". The first half Erica Ferguson was unstoppable, inside or out they didn't have an answer for her. She scored 18 points in the first half giving the team a huge spark. We transitioned well and got some easy buckets with the help of senior point gaurd Jess Stewart pushing the ball up the floor. Senior Hillary Adams got hot second half knocking down her famous treys that we all love to watch go in. The final score was 91-61 in our favor. I would say a 30 point win, 4 players scoring in double figures (Erica Ferguson 24, Hillary Adams 18, Katie Bond 13, Brandie Roberts 12), a GIANT 56 POINTS in the paint and 24 points coming from bench is a great way to kick start the season. There is still work to be done, but a great start nonetheless. 1-0!

Tonight it's time to bring out the BIG GUNS! We play Oklahoma Baptist University at Baker at 5:30 pm (Baldwin City,KS). OBU is currently ranked 3rd in the Nation and returning 2 starters, one of which was the Sooner Conference player of the year and 4 DI transfers this year, as well as loads of talent off the bench from last year. This will be a great challenge for for our team, one that they are ready for and starring right in the face. Today will be a battle for sure but don't count us out we're ready to work hard and tackle the giant! We hope to see you all there!

What a great day to be a Cardinal!

Lights, Camera, Action!

Tonight is our season opener! We will be on the road to kick start our season at Ottawa University (KS). The team is ready to go...eagerly waiting for the ball to be thrown in the air. It's been a long couple months of preperation in preseason and practice, yet it's gone by fast at the same time...funny how that works! Tip off is at 5:30pm, we hope to see you there. If you can't attend but want to listen in, you may do so at www.jewell.edu, go to the Athletic Website and log on to the WJCSN...or you may dial up 816-410-7959 and listen to the play-by-play of Rick Cole. The men also kick off their season tonight at Ottawa right after the women's game, game time is 7:30pm. The girls would agree it was nice to play someone outside of practice but we have work to do before games start.
Tonight is CARDINAL NIGHT! Come join the fun; it starts at 9pm. This is a great chance to watch both the men's and women's teams play a short inner-squad scrimmage. There will be games and prizes for all to participate in! This is a great opportunity to meet your Jewell Basketball Teams! We look forward to seeing you tonight.
Tomorrow we travel to Central MO for our second scrimmage starting at 5pm. We are excited to see the improvements we've made and new things we've added. The girls continue to work hard each day and look forward to playing outside of practice. This scrimmage will be a good test for us; we look forward to the battle on the hardwood!

Another great day to be a Cardinal!

First scrimmage ahead

Preseason was a success for the team. All the girls worked hard and we made it through with minimal injuries. A few pulled muscles, a couple turned ankles, and mostly sore bodies...but it's to be expected through preseason. I think the girls favorite conditioning day was running in the rain on the track!

Practice has been going great. Each day is a learning day, another day to improve and another day filled with excitement as we watch the players build together. The young one's (freshman) are coming in to their own, as the returners are leading the way. We have our first scrimmage against Penn Valley and JCCC tomorrow, thurday Oct., 22 at 6pm. The girls are ready to play someone other than themselves! Everyone is more than welcome to come out and watch. It will be a good test for us to see where we're at and what we really need to focus on.

I hope everyone is ready for an exciting season...we are!

Go Cardinals!
